CHARACTER
Character Name: Mettaton
Character Age: He has no canon age haha. I usually go with his looking to be in his twenties
Canon: Undertale
Canon Point: Post-True Pacifist
History: Wiki!
Personality: Mettaton is a giant robot showboat and everyone in the Underground loved him for it.
But before he was that showboat, Mettaton was a ghost with dreams of stardom and corporeal form. His ambitions were clear even then, because despite his modest beginnings as a snail-farmer and his attachment to his cousin Napstablook, Mettaton had dreams of performing for an audience. Even in his old home, he had a poster of two humans dancing, which lends to the idea that he was inspired by human culture, perhaps idolizes it. His mechanical body even appears more human than most monsters in the Underground.
Mettaton’s ambition led him to become an excellent entertainer despite his (initially) limited form as a rectangular robotic unit. He’d always had a very flamboyant and overly affluent way of speaking for a former snail farmer, and for his job as the sole celebrity in the Underground it was pretty entertaining. His speech patterns are also well-suited to being a TV show host, a news anchor, the lead of a play, and a cooking show host, all things which he has done at one point or another. Specifically, he speaks very emphatically, with constant enthusiasm. It’s just his nature to be very expressive. This also lends to his acting skill, which is also excellent. He hardly ever breaks character, and, for example, leads his human “guest star” through the motions very well, never showing that anything is amiss and that he is not actually a killer robot until several skits down, where he begins to tire of Dr. Alphys’ ploy.
His eventual abandonment of his role as a killer robot outlines another important trait of his; narcissism. It’s clear why Mettaton is so obsessed with being a star has to do with how self-centered he is. While he does care about his family, he was willing to up and leave the snail farm just to achieve his goals, and despite being assisted by Dr. Alphys in this, he appears to regard her with some disdain and only plays his part because he knows that he owes her for his body. He’s not above inconveniencing her, or really anyone else in the Underground, going so far as to install a fountain which spouts water out of its own retention pool and put employees through rigorous and unfair work conditions. Not to mention he wanted to kill Frisk just because he thought that they weren’t strong enough to break the barrier, and that he would be better suited to simply taking their SOUL and freeing all monsterkind…so he could be a star aboveground as well. Talking himself up in this way comes second nature for this robot.
That said, he really is important to the Underground in his own way, because Mettaton’s charisma endears him to the monsters enough for him to be loved and respected. His ease at lading the stage and generating dramatic narratives is particularly helpful to this, and his expressive nature doesn’t hurt. Most especially in his EX form, Mettaton tends to make flashy moves and pushes himself to the limit in the name of entertainment. What’s a few limbs lost to a star like him, when he has a whole crowd to entertain through the camera?!
And that, truthfully, is where Mettaton has the redeeming quality of caring for others. He loves his fans and will maintain his showmanship for their sakes, not just the ratings. Were it only about the ratings, his call-in event would never have made him reconsider going to the surface to become a star, and he even admits that monsters only have one celebrity—him—and that maybe he ought to stay where he is to keep them happy. He also cares about his cousin Napstablook and remembers their voice and mannerisms enough to realize that the ghost was his first call-in. So yeah, Mettaton has his flaws and bad habits, but he isn’t a bad guy. He cares.
Inventory: Mettaton has an item known as a PacDisc which he was given in Thisavrou. It’s basically a nifty device that breaks down whatever’s put into it for consolidated storage until the user needs it! He carries it on his person and it stores all this junk excluding itself. He also has a TAB (Thisavrou Audiovisual Badge) which will not function, but he still keeps it on his person. It’s small, like the PacDisc, and it sticks to surfaces. So naturally. He puts it on his outer thigh. Because you can’t tell him what to do.
Abilities: ○ Magic -- Mettaton is a robot inhabited by a monster SOUL, which means he’s able to use magic. The magic he has access to include electrical magic, bomb summoning, and the ability to also summon small versions of his box form which can attack an enemy. His most powerful attacks originate from his core, which is actually his SOUL, but those also leave him vulnerable to attack, as he has to expose his core in order to use them.
In addition, as all monsters seem able to do, he can make use of mild healing magic. He's not proficient in it, but it is based on monster compassion, something that he doesn't lack even as a robot.
○ Transformation -- Mettaton is a versatile robot with more than one form. His first form is something akin to a TV with arms, and is his most defensively sound body. His second form, Mettaton EX, is less defensive and more resource-heavy, which means he has to charge more often. However, it is also more humanoid with legs, arms, and a face with expressions. This is Mettaton's preferred form, though he hasn't discarded the boxlike form by any means. In addition to his box form and EX, Mettaton also has a different transformation--Mettaton NEO. Unfortunately, this form is not currently a readily accessible form for him (this is part of my headcanon, but basically since he's from the True Pacifist timeline, I play it so that the form was incomplete, and he has no means to trigger a shift into it--and why would he? It's useless in battle and the defenses are even worse than his EX body).
○ Charisma -- Mettaton’s charisma is pretty much a skill. He is the only television star the Underground had, and played it up with gusto, to the point that when he had a call-in to his show for the last episode, all the monsters insisted that they would miss him if he ever went away. With that charisma comes the ability to lead an audience and host events/shows. Even though he's narcissistic and a showboat, Mettaton uses his skills to make sure that anyone he ropes into his impromptu game shows knows that they're important to advancing...whatever is going on!
○ Robot Strength/Intellect -- In addition, as he's a robot (sort of), Mettaton has unnatural strength and calculative capabilities bestowed to him by his body and its workings, things he doesn't often use because all he cares about is being a TV host, and having practical robot skills is quite honestly a bit below him...in his opinion, anyway. If forced to be a brute or a calculator, or a calculative brute, he will do it.
○ Hardiness -- Also due to his robotic nature, Mettaton can be dismembered and still function. To the point of just being a torso and a head. He prefers to be whole of course, but can function better than an organic being in that state, and he doesn't bleed or leak any fluids since he is, as the game clarifies, made of "Metal and Magic." When the ghost that Mettaton was is fully fused to the body, however, Mettaton can be killed by destroying his SOUL or damaging its housing irreparably. It’s the tradeoff for being corporeal. (This isn't currently valid; he hasn't been fused to his robot body since he died in the CRAU I'm bringing him from). When he is NOT fused to his robot body, Mettaton is functionally immortal, but if you can find a way to hurt a ghost monster...
○ Acting Skills -- Mettaton isn’t just a star by name, he actually does put on a good act! He’s a great singer, a good cook (despite being unable to eat), a stellar actor, a wonderful dancer, and he’s very flexible. ;)
Flaws: Preexisting Flaws - Mettaton is very egotistical, and even managed to abandon his cousin despite promising he never would, seeking out stardom, and then selling his best friend, who helped him achieve his lifelong dreams, up the river just because he was bored.
He's so self-centered, in fact, that he almost committed child murder in order to free himself, and only himself, from the Underground by stealing said child's soul.
In addition, Mettaton has pretty violent tendencies, and tends to sacrifice the well being of others if it'll get him attention, especially for his shows!
Thisavrou-related - Mettaton's become an intensely cynical person who trusts hardly anyone, and tends to lash out when he's messed with. In addition, he has a realistic (read: uncharacteristically negative) view on things and is overly apologetic as a means of compensating for something he must have done wrong, even if he didn't really.
In addition, he doesn't feel much remorse for his violent tendencies anymore, and will often fight even if there is another option, because he can't see any others in the tunnel vision of his cynicism. That's what is expected, right? That's what he's got to do.
CR AU
Previous Game and Time: Thisavrou, from April 2016 to current
Previous Development: Let's start this off simply, shall we? THE BOY HAS CHANGED QUITE A BIT.
While Mettaton is still the same entertainment-oriented guy on the inside, and as much as he still tries to be optimistic, he's kind of lost his way on that path since being pulled through the Ingress and onto the Moira (the ship where all characters during his joining point ended up while in Thisavrou). At first, he made it his goal to get a job that fit his personality, and he even put together an entire recording and audio hub in an empty area of the ship.
Unfortunately, life wasn't so simple on the Moira, and he found that the ship's monthly stops at different planets and space stations began having an effect on him. Del Pascia was relatively tame, but he still found himself in a bit of a panic running away from what equated to zombies, and he found that an unpleasant experience.
Except for one thing. Del Pascia was the first planet where he was able to spend time with his Number One Fan, Papyrus, and he quickly found himself endeared to the skeleton for his optimistic and genuine nature, something that Mettaton, as an actor and a bit of a narcissist, could only ever aspire to. Through the passage of 4 months or so, he found himself smitten with the skeleton and discussed this with his brother Sans, practically ad nauseum. Good thing they both loved talking up Papyrus, right?
Unfortunately, life on the Moira quickly began to take a toll on Mettaton. May and June were a relatively uncomfortable yo-yo for him in which he visited some nice worlds, saw some very discomforting ones, caught a strange sickness from spiritual Japanese entities, and ended up learning that the object of his affection was from a different time than he was, a time in which he'd died. Thankfully there was some respite, in which he continued to unwittingly court a cute skeleton boy.
Then...all hell broke loose. Aliens attacked the Moira seeking retribution for what past crew had done, and many people the robot deemed important ended up dead. Unable to cope, he responded with anger and expended all of his strength murdering the Caducans, until finally, he himself died. He never thought he could die, and the consequence of such involved being revived as his former self--a ghost.
As if this wasn't enough, as soon as Mettaton was able to repossess his body, he was sent against his will to a place known as the Outpost and used as a murdersport slave. This is one of the events which eventually shattered his optimism and imbued him with a deep sense of cynicism and distrust of other races, particularly humans. He still looked up to them, but even that view was shaken too badly to ignore...
And with everything he knew and loved being shaken apart, Mettaton knew more than ever that he had to be honest, and he had to find someone he could depend on, because he couldn't handle this alone. So...he finally shared his feelings with Papyrus, and for a very short time, they were the most disgustingly saccharine boyfriends you could even imagine, and more, because they fed into each others' ego trips. It was horrifying...but it was cute.
And it ended very soon after with Papyrus' disappearance from the ship.
Mettaton has been grieving the loss ever since, and throughout all the other events that came to pass (the shitty lotus-eater style planet where he lost a year, being turned into a human for like two weeks, dealing with a weird temporal shitshow which turned him into an alternate future version of himself that was really freaking weird), he grew more and more embittered, and he never really healed from the traumatic experience of being a murdersport slave.
You just don't heal from gaining EXP and raising your LV. The effect of gaining Levels of Violence caused Mettaton to become very callous when concerning matters of death and hurting others, and...well, that's not going away anytime soon.
Because of this uncomfortable effect, being unfused from his robot body, and constantly being forced into more and more violence and uncomfortable situations, Mettaton's found himself to be incredibly jaded, unable to express optimism or happiness, and most importantly of all...he can't move on from anything, because he needs to talk about it, but can't, and the pain slowly festers, making him insecure and apologetic as well as giving him uncomfortable, dissociative thoughts.
Dissociative thoughts that are hardly made better by the fact that when the new captaincy decided to use timeslip technology to propel the Moira, he literally got to watch every single alternate timeline of his world through the windows of the ship. He's literally a compendium of meta. That is not a cool pun. No one should know that much.
And he's not okay. In fact, he often asks himself whether he exists.
To put it all simply, Mettaton's gone through a lot, mentally and physically, and it's really screwed him up and given him some serious problems.
SAMPLES
Action Log Sample: Mettaton is almost reminded of his time in space when he comes back through the Door and realizes that things look...somehow different from what he remembered of Hadriel. It only solidifies his feelings on what Hadriel actually is, and that the gods are just as culpable as his old captains on the Moira.
That is, no one knows what the hell they're doing anymore. Still, perhaps he's just used to being sent here and there...but he's not too surprised at the change of scenery.
What does surprise him is the fact that he's coming through the Door again, as if he'd not been here before. Isn't the blasted thing supposed to be a one way portal, and only once? He sighs, reaching for his PacDisc. It was great for storing many things...including his phone. Casually, he flips through his contacts, one hand on his hip. Could anyone really blame him for being utterly un-amused?
He clicks the physical buttons, seeing as he really doesn't feel like removing his gloves right at the moment, but hey! He doesn't have to go far since his best friend tops the alphabet. Before he can initiate a voice chat with her though, Mettaton hears something approaching behind him. He turns his head slightly, angling his eye to look at what was approaching. It looks like...a rhinoceros? He's not sure if it's going to be aggressive yet, but he does turn to face it nonetheless. Even standing at his full height of seven feet, that creature is pretty large. He shouldn't try and bother it, right?
You shouldn't but what if it gets you first? he could hear a voice at the corner of his mind ask him. Mettaton had long since learned to behave defensively. No amount of time away from the planets he'd encountered would ever clear him of such paranoia. At least...he hadn't been in Hadriel long enough for it. Everything was an enemy; guilty until proven innocent.
The creature snorted at him, and he tensed.
Mettaton wastes little time in putting his phone back away into his PacDisc, sliding one foot back into a defensive stance. The beast chuffs once again, pawing the ground because every bit of the metal man before it screamed danger, somehow.
Mettaton smiles as it begins to shuffle uncertainly. Waiting til it attacks? No, he's no fool.
It's just one. It'll be fine. He can handle himself.
IT'LL BE FUN, right? He's only survived this long by listening to that angry, vicious part of himself for over a year. This is a test...like everyone who comes through the Door.
That's what Mettaton tells himself as he rushes the bronto and gets ready to figure out if he can pull the horns off of it one by one.
