Game Summary: Soulgemmed was a game based on Puella Magi Madoka Magica, with specific use of the third film's (Rebellion) rules of engagement. Characters would be pulled in after making a contract with Kyuubey to become magi, in order to fight Witches and Nightmares. The characters would be encouraged to work together often in order to defeat large-scale Nightmares and Witches.
How long was your character in Game: About 9 months
History of Character in their Game: As per the premise of Soulgemmed, Mettaton was encountered by Kyuubey during the moment of "highest potential" for him, which turned out to be just before he faced off against The Human, and knowing that in the face of that power, he was hopeless. Presented with the opportunity to wish it all away, Mettaton displayed an unusually selfless nature, wishing for Frisk to be removed and nonexistent to the Underground at large, and for the monsters to live happily.
Becoming a magi from that point was expected, but also took a bit of a toll on him. Mettaton, being extremely motivated by the attention he received as the star of the Underground, attempted to bring that level of showmanship into being a magi and protecting Nyoi-cho from Nightmares. Given his ability to learn quickly and adapt within a short period to new situations, he found himself comfortable wielding his new weapons. It made him overconfident.
Unfortunately, Mettaton was brought down to earth by his utter failure against his first Nightmare, and he became a bit of a laughingstock for having his abilities drained by energy leeching grass. As a result of events like this, Mettaton was humbled and became more interested in bettering himself and working with the other magi. Not much changed at that point, except that he found himself interested in spending time with the boss monster prince, Asriel Dreemurr. Being in Nyoi-cho and losing contact with all who he held dear...made Mettaton wish to protect and befriend Asriel, since Asriel was the only reminder of home, and homesickness hit him hard early on. In addition, he made amends for his foolish mistakes with the other magi, including de facto leader Noriaki Kakyoin, as well as Madoka Kaname. His relationship with Kakyoin was generally affable, even with the missteps Mettaton took soon after. Despite the problems that he caused with decisions made that put others' lives on the line, he could always count on Kakyoin for some perspective and...well, not full-blown sympathy. But at least some understanding. On the opposite side of the spectrum, he found that Madoka was simply a kind soul who either saw no fault in others, or chose to accept that and ignore it. Even at his worst moments, her shining hope and constant empathy made her a human being he knew he could trust.
Now, however, we are approaching the first step Mettaton takes into his freshly jaded attitude. Soon after arriving, he came to interact with Asriel in a "Flowey" mindset, through the effects of an event which caused personality shifts in player characters. Upon asking Asriel about this strange behavior once it concluded, the young monster revealed the true nature and origins of Flowey, sparking sympathy from his fellow monster due to the fact that technically, Asriel had lost his SOUL in death. Unfortunately, all sympathy was removed when Asriel explained the concept of SAVE and LOAD to Mettaton, who took it to mean that his wish had only delayed the inevitable, and even wishing the Human away would still result in them "altering" what he'd done to proceed.
This revelation triggered Mettaton's despairing descent into a Nightmare...and this Nightmare was truly the worst of what he felt. The normally confident and charismatic robot was now reduced to a crying, stepford smiling, self-harming and violent individual who only had despairing words to tell others. This aspect of Mettaton's personality is an amplified expression of how he truly feels at this point--useless and unable to save the ones he cares about. Because of course, everything can be changed back. He is eventually liberated from this form by his fellow magi, including Asriel. The boy's involvement caused Mettaton to reconsider his stalwart mistrust and hatred. So...he decided he'd let Asriel prove he was to be trusted.
The more time that passed, the closer Mettaton grew to Asriel, and the more cooperative he became when it came to the large Nightmare and Witch fights. He was actually getting better at what he was doing and gaining both experience and more advantageous abilities. Still, something niggled at the edge of his mind; all of this was a farce. His wish had meant nothing, and even getting better at being a magi for the rest of his life was not going to fix it. Moreover, he'd found out from Madoka the true nature of Witches, which made him not-so-secretly bitter. These emotions stewed, even as he fought to maintain a purified Soul Gem, and eventually, in March, it culminated into a poor decision with good intentions behind it.
During March, the magi of Nyoi-cho are faced with a choice: vote on which of the two NPC characters--Miki Morikawa and Hoshiko Ohka--would be used in a Witch experiment. Mettaton makes the choice to abstain voting publicly, but offers a hand to Pokey Minch in order to try and subvert the options and save both girls. Due to a previous, unusually dark conversation with Asriel that presents a red flag for his mental state, he appears more overtly prone to violence at this point. When an ultimatum is presented, in which the three magi exploring the underside of a school where the girls might be hidden are told to turn back lest they seal the girls' fate, Mettaton stubbornly chooses to call that bluff; he forces Pokey and Asriel to play along with him in attempting to put an end to it all. Unfortunately...his justice-filled gamble leads to the girls both being turned to Witches and let loose on the city later on.
The other citizens of Nyoi-cho then choose to ostracize Mettaton, Pokey and Asriel for their bullheaded move and the consequences of it. Mettaton doubles down, of course, being the stubborn individual he is, and while refusing to apologize, says that he only had the best intentions. A shame, that the best intentions still managed to make him a social outcast, far removed from his former title of superstar celebrity and feeling quite alone on that platform. Unable to resolve such feelings even by helping to fight against the two Witches, Mettaton succumbs to his own despair and "falls down," slowly dying with only Asriel and Pokey to mourn him.
Even upon coming back, his attitude has become so soured against the magi who still treat him with disdain that Mettaton permanently gains a chip on his shoulder with regards to humans and their ungodly standards, something pushed even further to the brink during the next event; there, the Witch Solveig controls the other magi against the three "Unforgivables," causing them to attack and kill both Pokey and Asriel. Mettaton is spared by sheer providence, and despite being blinded, is the only one to search out and protect Asriel's soul gem for his inevitable resurrection.
As a result of everything that had happened, Mettaton does end up closer to Asriel than ever, and as a result becomes better acquainted with Pokey. While Asriel was the kid that Mettaton felt he had to soften blows to at a point, and who he felt bad talking about tough topics with at length given how they would often make each other feel worse for it...Pokey was someone who he could confide in. More so than ever because they were all unforgivable. Pokey often listened to Mettaton's cynical thoughts and offered his own, or did his part to kick Mettaton onto a more sensible path of thought. He wasn't afraid to offer sympathy with a bit of an edge.
Despite attempts to lightheartedly addressing the network and trying to rebuild what he had lost, Mettaton found it difficult to maintain many friendships with humans...other than Pokey and, to some extent, Dirk Strider. Dirk helped to fix Mettaton after the fight with Solveig, and even spoke at length with him on matters concerning the magi who had deemed to single out him, Asriel, and Pokey. Like Pokey, Dirk wasn't full of just sympathy. He had a way of putting Mettaton in place while at the same time not antagonizing him.
...Like Dito. Ohhhh, Dito. Quite possibly Mettaton's most negative character relation, the boy went so far as to take Pokey's decapitated head post-Solveig fight and take selfies and glamour shots with it. He would also often try to get a rise out of Mettaton (which he was successful in doing more than once), and the robot promised him death on more than one occasion.
As a result of his particularly negative turn in emotions at the slightest provocation, Mettaton's Soul Gem corrupts faster than usual.
How did they change from their canon personality wise (Please explain what caused it to happen?): As mentioned above, Mettaton has gained some...shall we say, hangups. Asriel revealing to him the nature of SAVE and LOAD was a key factor in shaking his worldview so thoroughly that he has come to believe that very little he did or does holds any weight. Furthermore, his time in Nyoi-Cho near the end reminded him of how making mistakes can always come back to haunt you, and that the best intentions don't necessarily mean much when you condemn two girls to painful death.
He'd never meant it, of course. But in the face of the general population deeming him a pariah, Mettaton picked up a very cynical worldview, particularly about humans. Maybe it's his homesickness enhancing this feeling, but he's come to believe that humans can't be trusted, and hey. How's he wrong when a small human child killed more than half of the Underground's population?
While he is willing to give new people a chance, Mettaton is very likely to lose faith in people very quickly.
Additionally, due to his wish--the wish that put him in permanent servitude as a magi--being invalidated by Frisk's ability to SAVE and LOAD, Mettaton's self-esteem has taken a deep hit. He plays it off pretty well in public, but in private or around those he trusts, he'll sometimes show a vulnerability that's quite unbecoming of him. After all, he turned into a Nightmare in Nyoi-Cho for a reason...and not a very happy one at that.
How did they change from their canon physically (Please explain what caused it to happen?): Due to the mechanics of Soulgemmed, Mettaton's SOUL was condensed into a Soul Gem. Conveniently enough, the gem is inlaid in the shape of his original SOUL, so it doesn't look too terribly different, though it is flashier than the usual Magi's ring. Through this Soul Gem, he is able to transform into a magi and fight Nightmares and Witches with weapons and magic.
Due to his contract, Mettaton lost his own innate magic, but there are several callbacks in his new abilities, including the ability to channel electrical blasts with his scythe.
Powers:
ORIGINAL
○ Magic -- Mettaton is a robot inhabited by a monster SOUL, which means he’s able to use magic. The magic he has access to include electrical magic, bomb summoning, and the ability to also summon small versions of his box form which can attack an enemy. His most powerful attacks originate from his core, which is actually his SOUL, but those also leave him vulnerable to attack, as he has to expose his core in order to use them.
In addition, as all monsters seem able to do, he can make use of mild healing magic. He's not proficient in it, but it is based on monster compassion, something that he doesn't lack even as a robot.
○ Transformation -- Mettaton is a versatile robot with more than one form. His first form is something akin to a TV with arms, and is his most defensively sound body. His second form, Mettaton EX, is less defensive and more resource-heavy, which means he has to charge more often. However, it is also more humanoid with legs, arms, and a face with expressions. This is Mettaton's preferred form, though he hasn't discarded the boxlike form by any means. In addition to his box form and EX, Mettaton also has a different transformation--Mettaton NEO. He's never used it before, but it's a full-on battle form complete with arm cannon and an overall pointy look to it compared to his EX form (his shoulder pauldrons literally just look like MORE LEGS)
○ Charisma -- Mettaton’s charisma is pretty much a skill. He is the only television star the Underground had, and played it up with gusto, to the point that when he had a call-in to his show for the last episode, all the monsters insisted that they would miss him if he ever went away. With that charisma comes the ability to lead an audience and host events/shows. Even though he's narcissistic and a showboat, Mettaton uses his skills to make sure that anyone he ropes into his impromptu game shows knows that they're important to advancing...whatever is going on!
○ Robot Strength/Intellect -- In addition, as he's a robot (sort of), Mettaton has unnatural strength and calculative capabilities bestowed to him by his body and its workings, things he doesn't often use because all he cares about is being a TV host, and having practical robot skills is quite honestly a bit below him...in his opinion, anyway. If forced to be a brute or a calculator, or a calculative brute, he will do it.
○ Hardiness -- Also due to his robotic nature, Mettaton can be dismembered and still function. To the point of just being a torso and a head. He prefers to be whole of course, but can function better than an organic being in that state, and he doesn't bleed or leak any fluids since he is, as the game clarifies, made of "Metal and Magic." When the ghost that Mettaton was is fully fused to the body, however, Mettaton can be killed by destroying his SOUL or damaging its housing irreparably. It’s the tradeoff for being corporeal. When he is NOT fused to his robot body, Mettaton is functionally immortal, but if you can find a way to hurt a ghost monster...(since he has a soul gem, things are a little different, but the soul gem is spoken more on later)
○ Acting Skills -- Mettaton isn’t just a star by name, he actually does put on a good act! He’s a great singer, a good cook (despite being unable to eat), a stellar actor, a wonderful dancer, and he’s very flexible. ;)
SOULGEMMED
» Magi Transformation - As a magi, Mettaton's soul has been contained in a gem inlaid on his heart-shaped core. He can't be separated from it over great distance without going lifeless as it is literally a culmination of his entire being condensed into a gem, but for what inconvenience it poses, the Soul Gem is also the key to his magi transformation. This transformation allows him to fight Nightmares and Witches as he was contracted to do, and opens up the use of all four listed abilities below. It also grants him some neat transformation clothes!
» Quick Step - This ability is based on the aspect of Mettaton's wish that was made selflessly. As a result, he's able to apply a speed buff to any of his allies through physical touch, if he wills it usually, but sometimes if he's not regulating his power and he touches someone. Each use takes a fifth of his remaining battery power, and he's put into a catatonic state for six seconds before fully recovering his senses. This power was never improved and is at its most basic form, but there could be improvement. (I would of course ask OOC permission before using Quick Step on any characters ICly!)
» Scythe Manipulation - Due to the murderous aspect of his wish, Mettaton is able to summon up to six individual scythes and can control them either physically (in hand) or telekinetically. He's proficient with using three at once, but the more scythes he tries to use after that, the more of a chance he'll lose control of all or some. Using all six has a very high chance of overloading his processing and causing him to reboot for approximately six seconds. This ability has been improved with use. (It's very unlikely he'll be using anywhere near six scythes in the first place, but he's naturally nerfed with them; I hope that's sufficient but let me know if it's not!)
» Shock Break - An ability gained over time, Mettaton's scythes are now conduits for electrical magic, though nowhere near as strong as his old, innate magic. Shock Break is a form of magic attack which he can use to shock enemies at mid-range, or with physical contact to his scythe. The power is mediocre at best (again, with the potential to be improved) and can only stun normal-sized foes for short periods of time. The larger the enemy, the less effective the shock.
» Healing Touch - Another ability gained over time. Mettaton is able to heal others. There's no incapacitating caveat such as with most of his other powers, but the tradeoff is that it can only mend small scratches and contusions. Trying to use his healing on anything more grievous would only result in easing the pain, but not fixing the problem. Despite its name, Healing Touch works even when he's not touching someone, within a range of several feet. At current, due to this synergizing with only part of his wish, Healing Touch is not very powerful, but can be improved in the future. (As with Quick Step, OOC permission will be gotten before use of the ability ICly)
